Hello Dolphin Parents,

Welcome to the Dolphins 2017 swim season! This email has a wealth of information in it and I ask you to read it all, but first, if you no longer wish to be on this email list because you no longer have a swimmer on the swim team, please scroll to the bottom and click unsubscribe. For those of you who are still with the swim team this summer, this list serve will serve as your primary source of updated information on a weekly basis.

This write-up will cover:
  • Volunteers! Please, please, please read.
  • Important Upcoming Dates
  • Practice Schedule
  • Meet Schedule
  • Little Flippers Information
Volunteers!
As you all know, the swim team cannot function without parent volunteers. Thank you to all the parents who have already volunteered to step up and fill important volunteer roles, including leading our Little Flippers program, managing concessions for meets, serving in key officiating roles for meets!

Still, we need to fill some other key roles:
  • First, we NEED an assistant team representative. I have a couple of weeks of work travel this summer that I will require me to miss some swim team events. The assistant team rep will serve as the primary representative for B-Meets and will take on a couple of the Spirit Nights on Friday nights. I know this is a big job, but as I cannot be at several mid-week swim events this summer, I absolutely need a parent to help me out and step into this role. Please contact me directly at sbatko@gmail.com if this is something you would be willing to undertake.
  • Certified official roles: It would be great if some parents would be willing to become certified as a referee, stroke and turn judges, or a starter. We are working with a skeleton crew of officials right now which either requires our current officials to work every single meet or for us to be short officials for a meet. If more parents volunteer, we can spread around the work so that it is not so onerous for a few. If you are willing to do this for even 1 or 2 meets, please contact me directly and I will fill you in on details.
  • Clerk of Course: Our amazing clerk of course of many years, Cat Butler graduated along with her last swimmer son last summer. We need a parent or two to step in and fill that role. In this position, you help line kids up in their lanes. Please contact me if you are willing to consider this position even if it is only for a couple of meets.
  • Head Timer for B-Meets: Our faithful head timer for a number of years, Jason Parker is unavailable for b-meets and two a-meet this summer. We're looking for a parent to step into that role for those meets. Jason will be around at time trials and the early meets to help that person learn the role.
Please take the time to start to sign up for key swim meet volunteer slots using the sign up genius link below.

Important Upcoming Dates

Summer and NSSC Swim Team Season is upon us.  Swimmer's ear is an infection of the outer ear canal.  The medical term for it is acute otitis externa (AOE).  It is associated with "swimmers" since residual water in the ear canal creates a moist environment that can lead to bacterial growth.  However, any excess moisture due to sweat, other water activities, or even high humidity can contribute.  Some people are simply more prone to it than others.

PREVENTION OF SWIMMERS' EAR
  1. Make a mixture of 2 parts rubbing alcohol and 1 part white vinegar.  Put into a droppper bottle.
  2. After leaving water for extended period, dry each ear and put 2-3 drops of solution into each ear.  DO NOT rub ear canal with towel or Q-tip.  Allow gravity to let the water out.
  3. After last swim, when at home, re-apply drops, let dry for 2 to 3 minutes, then gently blow the ear canal dry with a hair dryer on low heat and low speed.

5 FOODS SWIMMERS SHOULD EAT
  1. Whole Grains: cereals, bagels, pasta and bread. (These provide you good long lasting energy)
  2. Proteins: Peanut butter, lean meat and dairy. (You should have protein before and after workouts)
  3. Fresh Fruits and Vegetables: Bananas are a great source of potassium and minerals. (Regulates water levels in the body and helps prevent cramping.)
  4. Calcium Rich Foods: Cheese, yogurt and milk. (For strong bones and protect from injury.)
  5. Fiber Rich Foods: Whole grains, apples, berries, almonds, legumes. (Helps keep athletes full and regulate the digestive tract.)
